Why AI Overviews quote some brands and ignore others
Google's AI Overviews don't pick sources at random. Here's what makes a brand quotable — and how to close the gap if you're not being named.
By Go Vista AI
Being ignored by an AI Overview is a new kind of invisibility. You can rank on page one and still never be mentioned, because the answer box is drawing from a different set of signals than the blue links.
47%
of AI Overview citations come from sources outside the top ten traditional results
Source · Authoritas
That single number explains why rankings alone are no longer enough. The sources AI systems quote are chosen for clarity, credibility and entity strength — not just domain authority.
Reason 01
You aren't described consistently anywhere
AI systems synthesise descriptions from many sources. If your website, directory listings, press coverage and social profiles describe you differently, none of them is safe to quote.
One exact brand name used everywhere
One clear sentence describing what you do
Consistent location and service mentions
Schema markup that matches visible copy
Reason 02
Your content answers around the question, not the question itself
Overviews need a direct, self-contained answer. Pages that bury the point under three paragraphs of context get skipped in favour of pages that say it plainly in the first fifty words.
Quick test
Ask someone unfamiliar with your business to read your key page for thirty seconds, then explain what you do. If they hesitate, the AI will too.
Reason 03
You haven't earned mentions in trusted places
Retrieval systems favour sources they already know. Coverage in industry publications, trade bodies, well-maintained directories and original research all increase the chance your brand is pulled into the answer.
- Digital PR that names you accurately
- Original data or benchmarks in your sector
- Speaking, awards and association membership
- Reviews and case studies on independent platforms
Reason 04
You aren't measuring share of citation
If you don't track whether AI systems name you for the queries that matter, you can't improve it. Share of citation is the metric that matters now.
