The technical SEO checklist that still matters in 2026

Most technical audits are 200 items long and 190 of them are noise. These are the ones that actually change outcomes.

Technical SEO has a credibility problem: enormous audits, tiny impact. The work that moves the needle is narrower than the industry likes to admit — but when it's wrong, nothing else you do can compensate.

Priority 01

Can it be crawled, rendered and indexed?

Everything else is decoration until this is true. Client-side rendering that hides content from crawlers remains the single most expensive mistake we find, and AI crawlers are markedly less patient than Googlebot.

01

Key content present in the initial HTML response

02

No important pages blocked in robots.txt

03

Canonicals pointing where you think they point

04

Sitemap accurate, submitted, and returning 200

05

"Discovered — currently not indexed" investigated, not ignored

Priority 02

One canonical version of your site

www vs non-www, http vs https, trailing slashes, uppercase URLs. Every duplicate splits signals and confuses the systems trying to summarise you. Pick one, redirect the rest with 301s, and make canonicals agree.

Common failure

A hosting-level redirect fighting an application-level redirect produces a loop. Search Console reports it as "couldn't fetch" and most teams blame the sitemap.

Priority 03

Structured data that describes reality

Schema is how you hand machines a clean description of your business instead of hoping they infer one. Organisation, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ and Article markup do disproportionate work in an AI-mediated results page.

  • Mark up your organisation once, correctly, sitewide
  • Keep schema consistent with visible page content
  • Don't mark up what isn't there — it's detectable

Priority 04

Speed, but only the parts users feel

Core Web Vitals matter at the margins. Chasing a perfect Lighthouse score does not. Fix the largest contentful paint on your money pages and stop there unless something is genuinely broken.

Priority 05

Internal linking as an architecture decision

Your most important pages should be reachable in two clicks and linked from every relevant piece of content. This is the cheapest ranking improvement available and the one most consistently skipped.

Do this today

List your five highest-value pages. Count how many internal links each receives. If the answer is under five, you've found your next hour of work.
