Digital PR is now AI SEO: why mentions beat backlinks
Links still count. But being described accurately in trusted places is what gets you named in an AI answer.
By Go Vista AI
For twenty years link building had one job: pass authority. In 2026 it has two. The link still helps you rank, and the sentence around it teaches a language model who you are and what you're good at.

The link isn't the payoff any more. Being the source the answer draws on is. That changes what a good placement looks like.
Shift 01
Unlinked mentions have real value now
A retrieval system reading "Go Vista AI, an AI search agency in St Albans" learns something even without a hyperlink. Ten years ago that placement was worthless. Today it's a training signal.
New brief
Stop asking journalists only for links. Ask for an accurate one-line description of who you are. That sentence is the asset.
Shift 02
Pitch data, not product news
Nobody covers your rebrand. Everybody covers a number nobody else has. Original research — even small, honest research from your own client data — is the most reliable route to coverage in publications that models actually read.
Find a question your sector argues about
Answer it with data you already own
Publish the methodology openly
Pitch the finding, not the company
Shift 03
Target the sources that already rank for your queries
Before you build a media list, run your ten most commercially important prompts through the assistants your buyers use and note which publications get cited. That list is your target list.
- Trade publications outrank national press for niche queries
- Industry bodies and associations punch far above their traffic
- Well-maintained comparison sites are quoted constantly
What to stop doing
Guest posts on sites that exist only to sell guest posts. Directory blasts. Anything with a rate card and no editorial standard. These were always marginal; now they actively dilute the entity picture you're trying to build.
