Your traffic dropped but rankings didn't. Here's what happened
AI Overviews are absorbing informational clicks. A practical diagnosis, and the three fixes that recover the most value.
By Go Vista AI
It's the most common conversation we have right now: positions are stable, impressions are up, clicks are down. Nothing is broken — the SERP simply moved the answer above your listing.
68%
of Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026

Independent studies put the CTR damage on AI Overview queries at somewhere between 34% and 61%. The exact figure matters less than the direction: informational clicks are being absorbed, and they aren't coming back.
Diagnose
Split the data before you panic
Split your Search Console data by query intent. Informational queries will show the drop; commercial and branded queries usually won't. If the pattern is the other way round, you have a different problem — and it's probably technical or reputational, not AI.
Filter by query type: informational vs commercial vs branded
Compare impressions to clicks, not clicks alone
Check which pages lost — explainers or money pages?
Confirm positions actually held before blaming the SERP
Fix 01
Consolidate top-of-funnel content
Thin explainer pages that only ever existed to catch a definition query are the first casualty. Merge them into deeper, genuinely useful resources that earn links and citations rather than clicks alone.
Fix 02
Double down on commercial intent
Cost, pricing, comparison and 'near me' queries still send clicks, because the buyer wants to choose, not just to know. That's where your effort should sit.
Rule of thumb
If an AI can fully answer the query in two sentences, it will. If answering it requires your prices, your availability or your proof, the click is still yours.
Fix 03
Get inside the Overview
If the answer box is taking the traffic, be the source it quotes. Clear structure, tight answers, real expertise, credible citations — the same discipline that wins AI assistant mentions.
